Is it okay dancing alone?

“Okay” here I guess, means success, accomplishments, one professional dancer alike, etc.

I don’t know what your big dream is while dancing, but I believe dancing alone is as good and beneficial as practicing with many people in class or in a team.

I’m going to share my joys while dancing by myself, with hopes that you will see that doing this is not so bad after all. And you also have more independence with the time you have.

Long before while I was going to graduate Foreign Trade University, in the hallway, I was practicing in front of a door because it was shiny enough for me to look at myself. A friend asked:

“How many hours do you practice by yourself each day?”

“Maybe 2, 1 here 1 at home”

Then he laughed and told me that he did the same thing (he’s a guitarist) then he gave me a rhetorical question: “Isn’t it fun?”

Of course it has always been so fun. We laughed because we studied economics, not arts. Hence we felt that 2 hours per day is something really cool.

I really admire that friend of mine because whenever he plays, I see the true flame of passion. After that conversation, I think if I’m as passionate as he is, whenever I dance, my audience will see that spark too.

When self - practice, you will get to watch and adjust your own dance, and you will see your own progress day by day as you “edit” your movement every time. Progress is really important in mastering anything, especially good habits. If you see your improvement more frequently, you will be happier and more energetic in practice.

Self - practice will nail your own discipline, for no one is reminding (or begging) you to practice.

Self - practice will help you find your true love with dancing:

  • There are many types of music, which one you like best?

  • There are many dance styles, which one you are good at? fond at? bad at?

Everything will be answered as long as you look into yourself deep and long enough, by your own.

“Hey, is it true that… you can explore all the places but you are too shy to explore your own self” - Soi An Chay (my writing mentor)

I found my true calling and I wanna go to the max with it by researching myself like that, so I believe you can do the same

During the time of self - practice, I sometimes join classes to get new concepts and then review them to make them my own movement. So far, I think that is the best way to make other’s movements / feelings / ideas become your own dope style of performance.

Another fun thing is that if you join a workshop, you only have 1 - 1.5 hours to dance. However when you are at home / your own studio, you will get to dance as long and as much as you want

I hope if you are dancing alone, don’t feel so sad. Everything happens for a reason.

I rarely feel sad because I get to befriend with music, to be sunk into my own feelings.

You can do the same ^^
